Is the Econo-Miser Control Strategy in Air Handling Units Economical? (Part 1)
July 2013
This two-part series will briefly examine the economics of the long-held theory and code mandated practice of permitting air handling units to introduce up to 100% outside air and disable compressor operation and mechanical cooling when outside air enthalpic conditions are favorable. This analysis is within the context of the use of humidification in more mission critical facilities such as laboratories and health care facilities, where minimum humidity levels must be maintained year-round in order to preserve the integrity of experimentation and the health of the occupants.
Don’t Get Burned By Fan & Motor Heat Gain (Part 2)
May 2013
In our last issue of The Specifying Influence, we evaluated fan and motor heat gain within custom air handling units operating at high static pressures. We began by determining that a 50,000 CFM air handling unit operating at 9.5” WC total static pressure would generate about 6 deg F in fan heat gain.

MONITORING AND TESTING — CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR COMBINATION FIRE & SMOKE DAMPERS
Oct. 2012

RUNAROUND GLYCOL RECOVERY COILS
July 2012
Most if not all mechanical consultants specify glycol energy recovery systems for laboratories, health care facilities and other HVAC systems where outside air represents 100% of the system’s requirements. In theory, it makes sense to extract as much energy as possible from the exhaust airstream of such a facility and transfer it to the incoming supply air. IES sells these types of systems very often within our CES line of custom air handling systems. In addition, we sell heat pipes, plate exchangers and enthalpy wheels. So…..we have no proverbial axe to grind.
