Bitcoin is the most widespread of the cryptocurrencies in use today. These digital currencies, which involve a huge amount of computing power, aren’t issued by a central bank but are instead “mined” by computers that perform the energy-intensive work of validating transactions and adding them to a digital ledger, called the blockchain. These mining operations can create an excessive amount of heat. Loren Cook has designed ventilation fans specifically for this industry. The Unit Heater Beater
For more than half a century, Detroit Radiant Products Company has been setting the standard for high quality, cost effective, energy efficient infrared heaters. Re-Verber-Ray® brand products are recognized as a solution for most commercial, industrial and specialty applications. For more information visit the DETROIT RADIANT PRODUCTS COMPANY website.
This two-part series will briefly examine the economics of the long-held theory and code mandated practice of permitting air handling units to introduce up to 100% outside air and disable compressor operation and mechanical cooling when outside air enthalpic conditions are favorable. This analysis is within the context of the use of humidification in more mission critical facilities such as laboratories and health care facilities, where minimum humidity levels must be maintained year-round in order to preserve the integrity of experimentation and the health of the occupants.
In our last issue of The Specifying Influence, we evaluated fan and motor heat gain within custom air handling units operating at high static pressures. We began by determining that a 50,000 CFM air handling unit operating at 9.5” WC total static pressure would generate about 6 deg F in fan heat gain.
Consultants and design professionals painstakingly evaluate all building parameters within reliable manufacturers’ software programs in order to arrive at the exact cooling and heating requirements of commercial and industrial facilities, and specify the perfect air handling units to satisfy those loads.
Since many recipients of this e-newsletter are either installing contractors or specifying consultants, you have all noticed that you are installing and specifying more combination fire & smoke dampers than you did even a few years ago. Codes have now mandated their use whereas previously, simple curtain style fire dampers were deemed acceptable.
Most if not all mechanical consultants specify glycol energy recovery systems for laboratories, health care facilities and other HVAC systems where outside air represents 100% of the system’s requirements. In theory, it makes sense to extract as much energy as possible from the exhaust airstream of such a facility and transfer it to the incoming supply air. IES sells these types of systems very often within our CES line of custom air handling systems. In addition, we sell heat pipes, plate exchangers and enthalpy wheels. So…..we have no proverbial axe to grind.
